Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that individuals who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using such drugs must be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
