Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system caused extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of millions of people nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and homes washed out by strong flows.

Our team saved fourteen people who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. “A father also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and a second individual killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people with another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing were halted recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making cyclones more intense and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Researchers report that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events cause an average of US$3.5 million in losses to the country annually.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency on Thursday due to the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
