Consider this a dare for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but within Together resides a deep examination about how we choose to love our partners.
A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics
Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.
The plot starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar narrative setup, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.
The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.
Nuanced Portrayals
A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.
Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that come with long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Debated Finale
Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for staying single. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience at this very moment.
Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
